Panel: Carbon Removals, “not just an option – but a necessity”Description:
Unsurprisingly, the IPCC's latest report (March, 2023) highlights the need to implement CO2 removal methods to achieve Net Zero CO2 or GHG. Air Canada, United Airlines, easyJet are among the airlines that have invested in carbon-capture technologies. Furthermore, UK ETS Reform July 2023 states aviation businesses need to buy allowances for every tonne of carbon emitted under the scheme.

Non-CO2 effects account for two-thirds of aviation’s total climate impact, but no mitigation measures have made it so far in the EU’s aviation climate package.
What is the industry doing to address its full impact?
10:30 to 11:15
Session:
Panel: Flight emissions and climate change: it’s not only about CO2Description:
Despite scientific advancement many flight emissions calculators do not account for non-CO2 effects, resulting in a gross underestimation of the total climate footprint of a flight. In this session, we’ll discuss the non-CO2 effects. We’ll touch on the global assessment of contrails, uncertainties, and mitigation strategies. Our experts will update us on the latest science.

LUNCH BREAK13:30 to 13:50
Session:
Keynote: Unlocking Investment in the Service of Sustainable Growth13:50 to 14:35
Session:
Panel: A Deep Dive into FinanceDescription:
With the convergence of CSRD and CORSIA compliance pressures impacting aviation players within 2 years, it is natural to see an increase in transition, green and sustainability-linked financing in the aviation sector. However, while we’ve seen increasingly novel financing products, creditors are getting increasingly concerned about reputational and greenwashing litigation risk. The industry needs to develop more targeted KPIs in sustainability-linked financing to help prevent greenwashing, assess metrics to measure aircraft and engine efficiency and decarbonisation effectiveness and focus on decoupling CO2 emissions trends from capacity growth, amongst other objectives. In this session, we’ll also discuss how the Government sees their role in driving private investment into the Net Zero transition.
Speaker/s:
Dr. Ulrike Ziegler,
Ulrike Ziegler is president of impact on sustainable aviation e.V. (impact), a non-profit founded by leading aviation financiers. As a global platform, impact advocates for greater transparency and standardization regarding airline emissions by incorporating tangible KPIs in finance agreements.
Having held senior positions in aviation at major European banks she has worked with airlines and lessors around the globe, and served as member of the Investment Committee of an aircraft fund.
Haldane Dodd
Haldane Dodd is Executive Director at the Geneva-based Air Transport Action Group (ATAG). This organisation, the only global grouping of players from across the aviation industry, brings together airports, airlines, air navigation service providers and aircraft and engine manufacturers to agree common goals.
ATAG’s current mission is to provide a platform through which the aviation sector is working to reduce its climate change impact. ATAG works with funding members ACI, IATA, CANSO, Airbus, ATR, Boeing, CFM, GE Aviation, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce and Safran to ensure aviation is able to respond to global decarbonisation and sustainability objectives.
Previously, Haldane was Head of Communications and Advocacy at ATAG and Communications Manager with Airports Council International World headquarters where he worked on issues such as the environment, security and airport economics.
A British native, Haldane also holds New Zealand citizenship and started his aviation career at the listed company Auckland International Airport Limited, which runs New Zealand’s busiest airport. He has a background in broadcast media and holds a Bachelor of Communications Studies.
14:35 to 14:55
Session:
Keynote14:55 to 15:40
Session:
Panel: What makes a sustainable AirportDescription:
Airports have the opportunity to adopt low emission development strategies, optimise their energy and resource use, pioneer the use of electric vehicles within their estates, embed circular economy principles as they build new capacity, and drive socially valuable outcomes for local populations. In this session, we’ll discuss the opportunities and challenges they face developing highly integrated approaches.
15:40 to 16:25
Session:
Panel: Accelerating development and deploymentDescription:
There are different technologies enabling the reduction of carbon emissions and improving operational efficiency and they could be deployed far faster than SAF or Hydrogen. Since these potential benefits are relevant to all fuel types, they will contribute to both the short and long term decarbonisation of aviation. In this session we will focus on the adoption of a continuous improvement process, where small incremental changes add up to formidable positive change.
